The second edition of the book, “Obesity. Epidemiology, Pathophysiology and Prevention,” co-authored by Dr. Harry Preuss was released recently. The new book is an expanded version, near one thousand pages, of the first edition that received excellent reviews in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Preuss has been and will be busy this autumn lecturing at various sites. He was an invited speaker at the XVI Brazilian Congress on Nutrologia (nutrition) held in Sao Paulo this September. He presented two papers concerning the effects of the carotenoid, astaxanthin, on the insulin and renin-angiotensin systems and the ability of niacin-bound chromium to increase life span in Zucker Fatty Rats. Dr. Preuss was given an award, the HONRA AO MERITO, from the Brazilian Association of Nutrologia for his research in nutrition. In October, he presented an invited lecture entitled, “Managing Obesity with Natural Dietary Supplements: Lessons Learned from Clinical Research Studies.” The Chicago symposium focusing on women’s health issues was supported by NHRI (Natural Health Research Institute), the American Nutrition Association, and the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy.

In November, he will present an invited lecture before the American College of Nutrition, of which he is president, on “Strategies for the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes and Other Manifestations of the Metabolic Syndrome.” In addition, he will give a short presentation on his recent work comparing the abilities of natural carbohydrate blockers and insulin sensitizers to affect sugar-induced insulin resistance and elevated blood pressure.

Dr. Preuss was recently a guest on the Dr Oz TV show and described the ability of the supplement Garcinia cambogia to influence weight loss and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This led to an interview by the magazine Women’s World on the same subject.
