How to Apply

The Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Ph.D. Program and Cell Biology Ph.D. Programs require an online application (new window) to be completed to the Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) through the Georgetown Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application portal. Application elements, including letters of recommendation, are required to be submitted through the online application system. Only transcripts and test scores should be submitted independently by the applicant’s previous academic institution(s) and testing agency. Transcripts should be submitted to the Biomedical Graduate Education Admissions Office.


Applicants are required to upload to the application system unofficial transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended. Please do not send electronic or paper copies of your official transcripts before receiving an offer of admission. For additional details review Admissions FAQ.

    • The minimum TOEFL (new window) or IELTS (new window) score for admission is 80 (Internet-based test) and 550 (paper-based test) unless otherwise specified by the program. The minimum IELTS score for admission is 7.0 (paper-based test only).

All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university where English is the primary language of instruction (please note that applicants receiving degrees at universities in U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico, are required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS unless the primary language of instruction at the institution is English).

Applicants will be invited for telephone or in-person interviews in January and February (travel expenses and lodging are paid by the department).
April 15th Offer of Admission
The offer of admission will be offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences based on the recommendations of the admissions committee. The offer of admission must be accepted or rejected by April 15th, but earlier decisions are appreciated. Applicants with no offers of admission will be notified by the late spring.

Applicants DO NOT need to arrange a position in a laboratory prior to admission. Furthermore, prospective students that currently have positions in departmental laboratories must apply to the program through the same procedure as all other applicants and do not receive special consideration.
