Application Process
All applications are accepted through the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE). The application process is electronic. Please follow these instructions. Once you have initiated your application, choose the following options under Graduate Program Information to select either of the Department of Biochemistry PhD programs:
Department: Biochemistry and Molecular biology/Biotechnology
Program: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Ph.D. OR Cell Biology Ph.D.
Applications to the two programs are reviewed jointly, so there is no advantage to applying to both.
Official transcripts, recommendations and any other hardcopy materials should be sent directly to BGE:
Georgetown University
Office of Biomedical Graduate Education
3900 Reservoir Road, N.W.
Med-Dent Bldg SE108
Washington, DC 20057-1411
All questions regarding receipt of materials should be directed to the BGE. Send all materials well in advance of the application deadline. Expect at least two weeks after receipt for processing of hardcopy materials. Only complete applications can be reviewed. Do not contact the Department of Biochemistry PhD programs with questions regarding application status.
The application deadline for summer matriculation is December 1st of the previous calendar year. There is no spring matriculation for Ph.D. programs. Late applications will be reviewed if spots remain open. Complete applications that meet minimal requirements for admission are reviewed by a committee of Biochemistry faculty. Top applicants will be invited for telephone or in-person interviews in January and February (travel expenses and lodging are paid by the department). Offers of admission will be proffered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences based on the recommendations of the admissions committee. Offers of admission must be accepted or rejected by April 15th, but earlier decisions are appreciated. Applicants with no offers of admission will be notified by the late spring.
Applicants DO NOT need to arrange a position in a laboratory prior to admission. Furthermore, prospective students that currently have positions in departmental laboratories must apply to the program through the same procedure as all other applicants and do not receive special consideration.
