With a broad mission encompassing diverse research interests and six degree programs, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology occupies an entire floor of the Basic Science Building and has additional facilities in other parts of the Medical Center. Department resources are enriched through collaborative studies with investigators at the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Defense, National Institutes of Standards and Technology, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as well as the Biotechnology industry in the Washington metropolitan area and researchers around the world. These collaborations allow access to a wide spectrum of expertise and state-of-the-art technologies.

The more than fifty primary and secondary faculty members of the department have research programs in areas including adult stem cells, bioinformatics, cancer, infectious disease, neurodegenerative disease, and tissue engineering. The department hosts a doctoral degree as well as five masters of science programs: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Integrative Medicine, and Systems Medicine. Graduates from these programs have gone onto careers in academia, government, public policy, law, industry, and medicine.
